Rocket City Scores Big: Space Command HQ Lands in Huntsville!

Hold on to your helmets, ChumCity! Big news just blasted off: Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville is officially the permanent home of U.S. Space Command! Alabama leaders are over the moon about the decision, which means roughly 1,400 Space Command jobs will be touching down in the Rocket City over the next five years.

"Sweet Home Alabama" Just Got More Futuristic

Governor Kay Ivey couldn't contain her excitement, declaring, "Space Command Headquarters is coming to Sweet Home Alabama!" She gave a shout-out to Huntsville and the state's Congressional team for their relentless efforts. Alabama, she emphasized, is always ready to back our nation's defense, and Huntsville continues to prove why it's "Space Central."

Protecting America's Assets in the Cosmos

Space Command's mission? Simple: to beef up our military's space operations and protect vital U.S. assets like satellites (think communications, navigation, the whole shebang!).

Mayor Battle: "Mission-Focused" Win

Mayor Tommy Battle added, "This decision isn't just about Huntsville, it's about ensuring our nation is ready for space's growing challenges. Huntsville's got the experienced workforce, strong infrastructure, and unwavering commitment to national defense to make it happen."

Huntsville: Built for Space

For Huntsville, this feels like a victory lap. The city was previously tapped as the preferred location, a decision that later shifted gears. But let's be real, Huntsville is a powerhouse when it comes to space.

Redstone Arsenal has been the heart of U.S. missile and rocket programs for over half a century. It's also home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the brains behind the Apollo program's Saturn V rockets and a continued leader in space exploration. Plus, Huntsville is a top destination for STEM professionals and aerospace engineers.

Alabama Commerce Secretary: A Landmark Moment

Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, called it a "landmark moment," highlighting the state's leadership in aerospace, innovation, and national defense. "Huntsville offers Space Command an ecosystem uniquely equipped to support its mission," she stated, praising the city's talent, research resources, and industry expertise.

Get ready, ChumCity! Huntsville is about to get a whole lot more... space-y!

Alabama's 2026 Senate Showdown: It's Gonna Be a Brawl!

Hold onto your hats, folks! The 2026 election cycle is shaping up to be a doozy, especially here in Alabama. The big kahuna? Coach Tuberville's U.S. Senate seat is up for grabs, and it's already heating up.

Money Talks: The "Billionaire's Club"

Let's face it: winning a Senate seat takes serious cheddar. We're talking big money, baby! It's often said that the Senate is a "Millionaire's Club," but in today's world, "Billionaire's Club" might be more accurate. Think Kennedys, Rockefellers... these seats have historically been bought and paid for by the wealthiest.

Here's the rub: typically, Washington lobbyists hold back their big donations until the general election in open Senate races. But in a state like Alabama, where the GOP primary is practically the whole ballgame, a candidate with deep pockets has a HUGE advantage.

The Contenders: Marshall, Moore, and Hudson

So, who's throwing their hat in the ring? We've got Attorney General Steve Marshall, Congressman Barry Moore, and Navy SEAL Jared Hudson. Hudson's got the looks, but needs that hefty cash injection to really compete. Marshall and Moore are both staunch conservatives, but neither are rolling in dough.

Marshall's playing with house money, having hit his term limit as AG. Moore, on the other hand, is risking his Congressional seat – a move that's sent many a politician to the "political graveyard."

The "Club for Growth" Factor: Dark Money Rising

The real key to victory? Tapping into that sweet, sweet right-wing dark money flowing from Washington. And the biggest player in that game is the infamous Club for Growth. These guys are the Daddy Warbucks of the far-right, and they LOVE influencing Republican primaries in deep-red states. They're anti-government, anti-Trump, and they're loaded.

The Freedom Caucus and Their Shenanigans

The congressmen backed by the Club for Growth are often members of the Freedom Caucus – a group seen as, let's say, "out there" by Washington insiders. They're relegated to the back benches, but they don't care! They're not interested in bringing home the bacon; they just want to throw reactionary bombs.

Moore's Club Connection: A Game Changer?

Barry Moore is the Club for Growth's chosen one in this race. They spent big bucks to get him elected before, and they're ready to do it again. Poor Steve Marshall doesn't know what's coming!

This race won't be decided in Alabama; it'll be decided by the dark money sloshing around in Washington. Buckle up, folks; it's gonna be a wild ride!

Help for Heroes: Free PTSD Relief in Alabama!

Alabama veterans and first responders, listen up! WellStone is offering a FREE shot at relief from PTSD symptoms. It's called a stellate ganglion block (SG, a simple outpatient injection that targets a nerve cluster in your neck. This little procedure has shown some serious promise in calming hyperarousal and other PTSD symptoms.

How Does It Work?

Think of it as a brain reset! Richard James Werschin, a veteran himself, explains the SGB targets the "fight-or-flight" response. "It helps reset the brain. The injection takes about an hour – you'll get some good sleep, and side effects are minimal. I, like many veterans, experienced almost immediate and lasting symptom relief, especially from hypervigilance!"

A Local Solution Goes Statewide

What started small in Cullman, thanks to local VFW leaders and state lawmakers, is now available statewide through WellStone. This program ensures access to this potentially life-changing treatment, complete with follow-up visits to track your progress.

Real Results

WellStone reports some impressive results: after four years of the program, participants show an AVERAGE 60% reduction in PTSD symptoms! Normally, this procedure could cost around $800, but for eligible Alabamians, it's completely covered!

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Veterans or first responders can start with a confidential screening by calling WellStone Cullman’s Access to Care line at 256-255-1020. You'll complete a PTSD scale and clinical assessment, and if you qualify, you'll be scheduled for the injection at Nesbitt Pain Associates in Birmingham.

Cullman Roots, Statewide Reach

This program began in Cullman in 2021, thanks to local VFW leadership and support from area businesses and lawmakers. "If you're a veteran in Alabama, battling PTSD and cannot count to ten while in a stressful situation, please call WellStone,” Werschin urges. “This could be the turning point you didn’t know was possible.”

Swordfish Surprise: How a Billfishing Trip Turned Record-Breaking

The crew of the Trade Desk, a 60-foot Hatteras, set out from Orange Beach for a three-day billfishing adventure. Little did they know, a casual thought about swordfish would soon become an Alabama Saltwater Record Book entry!

The Crew and the Goal

Robert Fritze, his dad Ron, and buddies Harold Wells, Jamie Boyd, Wes Hagler, and Robert Parks planned the trip for marlin and sailfish. "We saw where people were having success," said Fritze, "We headed southwest, thinking about deep-dropping, but it wasn’t the main goal, so we just pushed on.”

Dolphin, Wahoo, and a Spooked Marlin

Near the Delta House platform, the crew found a less-than-productive rip. They continued south, catching dolphin (mahi mahi), a wahoo, and some barracuda. A blue marlin even followed a barracuda to the boat, but vanished.

The Night Bite

As darkness fell, they jigged for tuna and prepped blackfins for bait. Fritze took the first watch, setting out a squid and light setup for swordfish.

Hooked Up!

After a while, the swordfish took the bait. "I grabbed the rod and got in the chair," Robert said. “He was down about 300 feet when he bit. It took about 30 minutes until we saw the fish the first time... Then he came back up, and I saw the bill coming out of the water... My buddy, Harold, said, ‘That’s a tank.’”

The Battle Begins

The fish dove deep, peeling off line. “He peeled drag off for a good bit, and then it was a slow, steady going away," Fritze recalled. After a grueling 4.5-hour battle, the crew finally had the massive swordfish boat-side.

Mayhem on Deck

Lacking proper gear, they used ropes tied to gaffs to secure the fish. “I got out of the chair and fell down immediately," Fritze said. “We finally got him in, and we were dumbfounded by the fact we actually got him in the boat.”

Heading Back

Without a fish bag, they headed back, facing a storm on the way.

Record Breaker!

A crowd awaited them at Orange Beach Marina. The scale read 550.3 pounds! "I tackled my dad," Fritze said, overwhelmed.

More Fishing!

Instead of celebrating, they refueled and headed back out, catching barrel fish, tilefish, and more dolphin. Jamie even caught his first sailfish.

A Lifetime Fish

"It was the fish of many lifetimes," Fritze said. "Doing it with my dad meant a lot. All we’ve ever done is fish.”

Crawmama's Wins "Bama's Best Surf & Turf"!

Picture this: three judges walk into Crawmama’s, noses twitching at the aroma of fresh seafood and smiles widening at the warm welcome from owner Charlotte Webb. What happened next? They devoured a mouthwatering 14-ounce ribeye topped with grilled Gulf shrimp, all nestled on a bed of rice. The verdict? Bama's Best Surf & Turf!

An Unexpected Victory

Who would've thought a restaurant nestled 350 miles from the Gulf Coast could snag such a title? Charlotte Webb, beaming with pride, shares, "I am so thrilled and appreciative! I don’t serve anything that I wouldn’t serve my family. We try to buy as much as we can in Alabama – it has the best of the best!"

Sweet Grown Alabama Cheers

Crawmama’s victory comes with a cash prize from Sweet Grown Alabama and, of course, serious bragging rights! Aisling Walding, Assistant Director, says they're "so thankful to highlight locally owned restaurants" and especially proud of Charlotte and her team.

More Than Just a Restaurant

Crawmama's is a true family affair! Forty years ago, Charlotte started selling fresh seafood, eventually growing into the beloved 300-seat restaurant it is today. Even after the loss of her daughter, Kathryn, in 2023, Charlotte remains dedicated to carrying on her legacy of love and delicious food.

The Judge's Say

The judges, after sampling the Flavorful Four finalists, were blown away by Crawmama’s. Judge Chelsea Gieselmann raved, "The beef tasted like beef! That’s one of the biggest compliments I can give a kitchen." Shelby Easterling added, "It felt like I was going back into an old steakhouse, even though the rest of the restaurant feels like you’re on the coast! There’s something for everyone at Crawmama’s.”

Family Fun

And speaking of everyone, even the kiddos are happy at Crawmama’s! The Crawbaby Corner, a huge sandbox and play area, lets parents enjoy a date night while the little ones play. As Judge Fred Hunter put it, "That, plus a delicious dinner, sounds like a win to me!"

Congrats, Crawmama's!
