Former Auburn quarterback Patrick Nix has stepped down as head football coach at Central-Phenix City.

Nix spent six years at the school, leading the Red Devils to a 65-14 overall record. His team won the Class 7A state title in 2023 and reached the championship game two other times.

“Coach Nix has left a lasting impression on Central High School,” principal Chris Lindsey said in a release. “The culture and values that he brought to our school were invaluable. Those same culture and values far outweigh the wins and championships that were won on the field. We are very thankful for the lasting impact that Coach Nix and his family have left on Central High School, and we wish them nothing but the best in the future.”

Nix’s oldest son, Bo, is the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

The Central-Phenix City release stated Nix was stepping down to pursue opportunities in the ministry field.

Nix did not immediately return a phone call from AL.com.

His final Red Devil team went 11-2, losing a dramatic 35-34 state semifinal game at home against eventual champ Thompson. He won at least 10 games in five of his six seasons at Central. His first team went 8-5 but still reached the 7A semifinals.

Before taking over for Jamey DuBose at Central, Nix won two Class 6A state titles in three years at Pinson Valley with Bo as his quarterback. He also spent four years as head coach at Scottsboro.

His overall high school coaching record is 131-36. In 13 years as a high school head coach, he never missed the playoffs.

Nix played quarterback at Auburn from 1992 to 1995 after graduating from Etowah High. His college coaching stops include Jacksonville State, Henderson State, Samford, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Charleston Southern.
