Keeping Our Skies Safe: Huntsville Congressman Pushes for Airport Security Funding

Folks, with more and more of us taking to the skies, keeping airports secure is a top priority! Good news: U.S. Rep. Dale Strong from right here in Huntsville is championing new legislation to make sure your airport security fees actually go to airport security.

The SAFEGUARDS Act: Reinvesting in Security

Strong, along with U.S. Rep. Tim Kennedy, introduced the bipartisan SAFEGUARDS Act. This act makes sure the money we pay through the 9/11 Passenger Security Fee gets pumped right back into improving airport and aviation security nationwide. Sounds sensible, right?

Where Does the Money Go?

Currently, we pay $5.60 on each one-way ticket for security. But, get this: Congressman Strong's office says that billions collected since 2014 have been diverted away from their intended purpose! This act changes that, dedicating $500 million annually to baggage explosive detection and $250 million to checkpoint tech upgrades.

Why Now?

With passenger numbers soaring and major international events on the horizon, our aviation security infrastructure is under pressure. Strong, who leads the Homeland Security Emergency Management and Technology Subcommittee, says this bill will give the TSA the resources to modernize and tackle evolving threats.
