Jackson Hospital: Setting the Record Straight

Dow Briggs, M.D., Executive VP at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, wants to clear the air. Jackson Hospital's financial woes? It's not Blue Cross reimbursement rates driving them into bankruptcy.

More Than Fair Reimbursement?

Despite what Jackson Hospital's CEO claims, they're actually reimbursed more than fairly. And get this: Blue Cross customers make up less than 25% of Jackson's patient base. Thinking that quarter is solely responsible for their financial state? That's a stretch!

Revenue Isn't the Issue

Jackson's actually seen revenue growth! In a 2025 meeting, their interim team told Blue Cross that revenue shot up over $122 million between 2015 and 2023 – a whopping 60%+ increase!

But...

Even with record revenue in 2022, they still reported an $8.4 million net loss. Ouch. Despite rising revenue, Jackson struggled. Blue Cross has repeatedly stepped up to help, respecting the hospital's role in Montgomery.

Going the Extra Mile

Blue Cross isn't treating Jackson Hospital as "just another contract." They've boosted reimbursements beyond standard models and even made cash advances to ensure its survival. This was done specifically to recognize their difficulties and protect access for the community, but our main responsibility is to Alabama employers and families.

Balancing Act

Just like families, Blue Cross has to stretch those premium dollars. Over 90 cents of every premium dollar goes towards patient care - among the highest rates in the country! With healthcare costs rising 7%+ annually, we have to be fair to providers and customers.

It's About Complexity

Jackson does important work, but their patient mix doesn't include the high volume of complex cases seen at larger hospitals. Different hospitals, different needs.

Fair Reimbursement?

Not every hospital should receive the same reimbursement. Hospitals handling the sickest trauma, cardiac, and cancer patients have higher costs. Flat rates would be unfair and skyrocket insurance costs.

A Sustainable System

Blue Cross negotiates with each of Alabama's 100+ hospitals based on objective criteria like services offered and patient complexity. We need a system that works for everyone - those complex care hospitals and the families paying premiums.

Here to Help

Blue Cross wants Jackson Hospital to succeed. We're committed to open dialogue and are ready to work with leadership, officials, and employees to find solutions that preserve access and affordability. The goal? A Montgomery where every patient gets the right care, and Alabama's healthcare system remains strong for generations.
