Ever heard about President William McKinley hanging out in Alabama? Bet you didn't know it happened 127 years ago today, back on December 16, 1898! Republican President McKinley himself rolled into Tuskegee Institute, all thanks to an invite from the school's main man, Booker T. Washington. Talk about a power move! The Prez didn't roll solo. Special trains chugged in from Atlanta loaded with his fam, cabinet members, and even General Joseph Wheeler, a former Confederate general from Alabama! History's a trip, right? Tuskegee Institute went all out, welcoming McKinley with open arms (and a massive crowd of over 6,000 people!). Even Gov. Joseph Johnston and the whole Alabama Legislature showed up. It was the event of the year! McKinley took a tour, watched a parade, and then dropped some wisdom in the school's chapel. He praised the college's lasting impact and how it was planting the "seeds of good citizenship." Pretty inspiring stuff! We snagged this juicy bit of Alabama history from The Art of Alabama Politics, where they dish out the wild, weird, and wonderful stories of our state's political past.McKinley's Visit to Tuskegee: A Blast from the Past!
