Remember when getting around meant calling a friend or hoofing it? Now, Uber and Lyft dominate, but are we hopping into cars with total strangers without thinking? Living in college towns and D.C., I've seen how vital rideshares are. But those apps can hide serious risks. I've heard too many scary stories! Ever had a rideshare driver who barely speaks English? Does that driver understand road signs? Could they call for help in an emergency? And let's be real, some of these drivers aren't exactly road rule sticklers. That's why I'm pushing for change. My Understanding Basic English Requirements (UBER) Act is simple: rideshare drivers in the US need to speak English. If you're working here, English proficiency is a must. It's common sense AND a safety issue! Uber and Lyft get government contracts, meaning YOUR tax dollars are involved! It's not just about safety; it's about holding these companies accountable. No English skills? No federal contracts for FIVE YEARS! My bill also demands rideshare drivers meet the same federal minimum standards as commercial drivers. We need vetted, safe drivers, period. These companies are prioritizing convenience over YOUR safety. They're hiring drivers who can't even read a stop sign using YOUR money! And are they even here legally? The problem isn't just with rideshares. Fatal truck crashes involving non-English speaking drivers are happening, too. A recent tragedy in Alabama is a grim reminder. That's why I introduced the Secure Commercial Licensing Act, mandating ALL commercial driver's license testing be in English. These common-sense bills shouldn't be controversial, but some politicians care more about illegal aliens than your well-being. I won't stop fighting to keep Alabamians safe on the road and in rideshares. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville is the senior senator from Alabama, a member of the U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs committee, and a candidate for Governor of Alabama in 2026.Rideshares: Convenience or Danger?
