Alabama's Electric Co-ops Power Up Endorsements!

The Electric Cooperatives of Alabama Political Action Committee (that's a mouthful!), the political arm of the Alabama Rural Electric Association (AREA), has announced its backing of Derek Chen for State Auditor and Chris Beeker for Alabama Public Service Commission Place 2. These endorsements, approved by electric co-op leaders from across Alabama, aim to boost rural communities and champion pro-energy policies.

Chen Gets the Nod for State Auditor

"Derek Chen is a bright spark with a deep passion for Alabama's future," says Karl Rayborn, CEO of AREA. "We're convinced he's got the brains and the drive to serve Alabama like a boss as state auditor." Chen, a Vestavia Hills resident with degrees from Hope College, Cumberland School of Law, and the University of Alabama, credits his family's immigrant story with his dedication to responsible citizenship and keeping government lean.

Chen himself is stoked about the endorsement: "AREA is a powerhouse for Alabama communities, making sure families and businesses have reliable, affordable energy. I'm thankful for their support and ready to team up to keep Alabama's energy future blazing!"

Beeker Backed for Public Service Commission

"Solid energy policy is crucial for Alabama's future – it impacts jobs, growth, and the strength of our communities," says Sean Strickler, VP of External Affairs at AREA. "Chris Beeker gets both the policy and the people it affects, and we're pumped to support him for a full term on the PSC."

Beeker, hailing from rural Alabama and currently residing in Tuscaloosa, previously served as USDA Rural Development director for Alabama under President Trump. He secured funding for essential resources like water, broadband, housing, and infrastructure in rural areas. He was also appointed to the Commission in 2024 by Governor Kay Ivey.

"Growing up in Greene County, I saw firsthand how electric co-ops support families, farms, and small businesses," says Beeker. "That experience stuck with me, and I know how vital it is to keep rural communities thriving. I'm grateful for this endorsement and the amazing work our co-ops do across the state."

Co-ops Committed to Alabama's Future

These endorsements reflect the united support of Alabama's electric cooperatives and AREA's dedication to strengthening rural communities and driving progress. Remember to mark your calendars: the 2026 primary is on Tuesday, May 19th!
