This exciting new collaboration unites the University of Alabama, the University of Georgia, and Mississippi State University. And they've got some heavy hitters backing them up: the governors of all three states, plus Southern Company, Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power. Buckle up!

Introducing MAGNET!

State leaders just unveiled the Mississippi-Alabama-Georgia Network for Evolving Transportation, or MAGNET for short! This tri-state economic development initiative will be headquartered right at The University of Alabama.

The brains behind MAGNET say it's all about organizing the region's impressive resources into a single, coordinated effort. This is how they plan to make sure the transportation revolution benefits from killer infrastructure, a super-skilled workforce, and a never-ending stream of innovation!

Southeast: Auto Manufacturing Powerhouse

“In 2023, our three states collectively built 1.9 million cars – further establishing us as national leaders in auto manufacturing,” said Governor Kay Ivey. "With virtually every auto manufacturer across the globe actively electrifying their fleets, we must position ourselves at the forefront of this transformation.” Preach!

This week, the big guns signed a memorandum of understanding solidifying the alliance. We're talking governors, CEOs, and university presidents – the whole shebang!

Potential Federal Funding

MAGNET is also a semifinalist in the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines competition. This means they could be in line for some serious federal cash!

"Auto manufacturing plays an important role in Alabama’s economy and throughout the Southeast," said Alabama Power Chairman, President, and CEO Jeff Peoples. "Working together, we will help drive growth for decades to come." Sounds good to us!

Alabama's Automotive Reign

Alabama's already a major player, with manufacturing giants like Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai, and Mazda-Toyota calling it home. Motor vehicles are Alabama’s top export, racking up $11.2 billion in 2023. That's enough to put Alabama at #1 for vehicle exports in the whole country!

Officials are saying this alliance is designed to keep the region on top as the global industry shifts toward electric vehicles.
