Get ready, 334 area code residents! You'll soon be dialing 10 digits for every call, just like the rest of Alabama. The Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) is rolling out the new 483 area code, meaning it's time to add the area code to all your calls. The PSC is encouraging everyone to start dialing 10 digits now, before the new area code officially launches on February 23, 2026. This "permissive dialing" period is a great way to get used to it! Mandatory 10-digit dialing kicks in January 23, 2026. The 483 area code is being added to make sure we have enough phone numbers to go around. The 334 area code is projected to run out of numbers by the third quarter of 2026. Don't worry, your current 334 number isn't going anywhere! New customers, or those needing extra lines, might get a 483 area code assigned. The PSC approved this overlay back in March 2024. The 334 area code covers a large chunk of central and southeast Alabama, including Selma, Montgomery, and Dothan. Did you know Alabama already has six area codes?
