With wildfires raging across 10 states this year, the highest number in a decade, folks living where the forest meets civilization are especially vulnerable. But fear not, ChumCity residents! Researchers at the University of Alabama have cooked up a brand-new model to help these communities craft smarter wildfire evacuation plans. Especially out West, where buildings mingle with dry brush, many communities face a unique challenge: wildly fluctuating populations! Think Truckee, California, where many homes are second pads and the Tahoe Basin bursts with visitors during fire season. Dr. Dapeng Li, a geography whiz, led the research. He says these temporary residents make evacuation planning a real head-scratcher. The number of people in town can change dramatically by the season, or even by the day! Many Western counties use systems that divide areas into Predefined Evacuation Zones (PEZ). This helps emergency managers evacuate in stages, preventing total gridlock. Dr. Li and his team wanted to know if these staged evacuations actually helped communities with lots of part-time residents. Plus, there wasn't any software out there that planners could easily adapt to their specific towns. To fill this gap, the UA squad built a model to simulate staged evacuations using PEZs. This nifty model can adapt to existing PEZs or ones created by local authorities. It can also adjust for those fluctuating occupancy rates in second homes. "This was a team effort and we collaborated with the Town of Truckee to secure the funds from National Science Foundation to work on this project,†Li said. The model considers how many cars leave each home, when they leave (based on fire proximity and prep time), and the distance to safety. They ran simulations with different occupancy rates in those second homes. Guess what? Staged evacuation is way more effective than everyone rushing out at once! "We found staged evacuation reduces the number of vehicles close to the fire front," Li said. This means less risk of getting hurt or breathing in smoke. It also cuts down on traffic time, which is a huge stress reliever when things are already chaotic. "Wildfire evacuations are inherently complex," said Madusha Maha Gamage, the lead author.
