Auburn Restaurateur in Hot Water Over Alleged COVID Relief Fraud!

Looks like someone's been cooking up more than just delicious dishes! Cesar Campos-Reyes, a 52-year-old Auburn restaurant owner, has surrendered to authorities after a dramatic multi-agency search targeting several of his businesses.

PPP Problems?

Federal prosecutors allege Campos-Reyes is facing charges for allegedly misusing funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims he submitted false info to score Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) for his string of restaurants and then spent the dough on stuff he shouldn't have. If he's found guilty on all counts, he could be facing a whopping 30 years behind bars!

Raids and Arrests

Law enforcement raided multiple El Patron Mexican restaurant locations owned by Campos-Reyes across several counties. While he wasn't initially found during the searches, he later turned himself in.

Immigration Sweep

During the operation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained 48 individuals at the restaurants accused of working without the right paperwork.

More Than Just One Case

On top of that, three additional arrests were made. Two people are charged with harboring undocumented immigrants, and another individual is facing a controlled substance violation.

The Feds Were Out in Force!

This operation involved a ton of agencies, including the FBI, DEA, HSI, ALEA, and even the Gulf of Mexico Homeland Security Task Force! ICE, CBP, the U.S. Marshals Service, and a whole slew of local law enforcement agencies also pitched in.
