Montgomery Curfew for Minors Approved!

The Montgomery City Council just gave the green light to a new curfew for anyone 17 and under in the downtown entertainment area. Things are about to get a little quieter after dark!

What are the Curfew Hours?

The new rules kick in at 9 PM on weeknights and 11 PM on weekends (Friday and Saturday), running until 6 AM. Surprisingly, it also applies during school hours. Councilmember Marche Johnson, a long-time supporter, believes that after 9 PM, there's simply nothing beneficial for minors downtown. The open carry of alcohol downtown further pushed the need to protect them.

Penalties for Breaking Curfew

Think you can sneak around? Think again! First and second offenses come with a hefty $500 fine. Repeated violations could land you in jail for up to six months. Ouch!

Dissenting Voices

Not everyone on the council was on board. Councilmembers Andrew Szymanski and Oronde Mitchell voted against the curfew, worrying about how easy it'll be to enforce and the possible damage to our city's image. Szymanski pointed out the ID issues and wanted downtown to focus on 'growth and positivity', especially in supporting programs like Main Street.

Police Chief's Take

Police Chief Jim Graboys talked about how curfews "can be effective," but admitted to constitutional issues. He pledged the police would do their best to enforce the new rules.
