Alabama Fights Back Against Unfair Trade!

Senator Tommy Tuberville is sounding the alarm! He recently declared it's "war" against unfair trade practices that are hammering Alabama jobs. He believes China is undercutting our cabinet businesses, and he isn't pulling any punches!

Tuberville: A Champion for Alabama Manufacturing

Senator Tuberville understands the importance of manufacturing in Alabama. He has stated that "President Trump understands business, he understands manufacturing, and that’s the reason he’s going after unfair trade.”

Local Company Faces the Heat

As a co-owner of Wellborn Cabinet in Ashland, Alabama, I recently shared the stage with Senator Tuberville and other leaders fighting to protect our industry. Wellborn Cabinet employs 1,400 Alabamians in Ashland - imagine the impact if we had to close!

A Legacy Threatened

My father and uncle started Wellborn 60 years ago, building it into a company that prides itself on American-made quality. Our team is everything! We offer great benefits, including on-site healthcare and daycare, and subsidized lunches. But they are worried - foreign imports are a major threat.

The China Cabinet Crisis

Back in 2020, tariffs were implemented in response to the surge of subsidized cabinets from China. But, it wasn't long before China started working around the rules by moving products through other countries like Cambodia, Mexico, and Vietnam to evade tariffs.

American Jobs Vanishing

Thousands of American cabinet jobs have already been lost across the country. At Wellborn, we've seen a huge drop in production and a reduction in employees.

President Trump Takes Action

President Trump has initiated an investigation to stop these unfair practices, especially the dumping of foreign-made cabinets at ridiculously low prices. Senator Tuberville notes that "President Trump has been strategically using tariffs," and is urging him to impose a 100% tariff on cabinets to save Alabama jobs.

Level the Playing Field!

We have the capacity to manufacture cabinets right here! We aren't asking to reshore! We just need a level playing field. Alabamians can compete with anyone, if we're given a fair chance.

Time to Act!

Senator Tuberville is right: thousands of Alabama families need this tariff. The cabinet industry supports tons of jobs nationwide, and we're asking President Trump to step in and truly Make Alabama Great Again.

Hot Start, Cooler Finish This Week!

Hey ChumCity! Expect the heat to hang around today, with highs flirting with the mid-90s. We'll see partly sunny skies and the chance of a pop-up shower or storm between 1 PM and 10 PM. Rain odds for your neck of the woods are around 30-40%.

Relief is Coming!

Good news! After today, temps will gradually ease off, and we'll see more scattered showers and storms as we cruise toward the weekend. Thursday and Friday bring highs in the low 90s, and by Saturday and Sunday, most of Alabama will enjoy highs in the 80s. Rain chances will be higher, too, with a 50-70% shot of getting wet each day – mainly between noon and midnight.

Next Week's Outlook

The weather gurus are saying temps should stay a bit below average for the first part of next week, with highs in the 85-90 degree range. We might creep back into the low 90s by Thursday and Friday. And, of course, expect the usual afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms popping up here and there.

Tropics Quiet… For Now!

The Atlantic is super chill right now. No tropical storm or hurricane action expected for at least the next week. But remember, we're heading into peak hurricane season (August, September, and early October), so stay tuned!

Blast from the Past!

On this day in 1979, Fort Collins, Colorado, got pummeled by a crazy hailstorm! Baseball to softball-sized hail caused major damage and injured folks. Yikes!

Carnley Garners Big Support in Re-Election Bid!

State Senator Josh Carnley's campaign just got a HUGE boost! The Alabama Farmers Federation, the state's largest farm organization, is backing him for re-election. Why? Because they see him as one of their own - a farmer who gets things done for Senate District 31.

Local ALFA Leaders Sing Carnley's Praises

Local chapter presidents are raving about Carnley (R-Ino), a farmer and owner of Buck Insurance Co. Tommy Thompson, from Covington County, calls him "one of us – a farmer and a businessman," emphasizing his understanding of the district's needs.

Jamie Wyrosdick of Coffee County agrees, noting Carnley's success in representing the area's farmers. "He is a good public servant, and we are proud to endorse him," Wyrosdick stated.

Honesty and Integrity Win the Day

Billy Hixon (Pike County) and Chris Carroll (Dale County) are also in Carnley's corner, citing his honesty, integrity, and dedication. Hixon proudly supports a "friend to farmers" who keeps his word. Carroll adds that Carnley is accessible, hard-working, and understands the needs of his farming constituents.

Carnley's Pledge to Continue Fighting for Farmers

Humbled by the endorsement, Carnley promises to continue advocating for producers and voters. "We share many conservative values important to the people of this district, and I’ll work hard to see to it that they’re well represented," he affirmed.

More Than Just a Politician

Carnley is active in the community, serving in the Enterprise Rotary Club and the Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority. He's a family man too, with three children, and a deacon at Ino Baptist Church.

Keeping Our Coast Cool: A Chat with a Conservation Hero

Alabama's got it all: stunning beaches and brag-worthy catches from the Gulf. But what happens when these treasures are threatened? We dove in with Jason Kudulis, Deputy Director of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, to learn about the latest coastal conservation efforts.

The Balancing Act: Development vs. Nature

"Coastal Alabama faces a constantly changing landscape," Kudulis explains. Maintaining that delicate balance is key, especially in booming Baldwin County. All that new construction means more hard surfaces and, you guessed it, more stormwater runoff.

Stormwater Runoff: The Sneaky Villain

Ever underestimate the power of rain? Kudulis breaks it down: "Everything that falls from the sky and can't soak into the ground becomes stormwater runoff." Recent weather events have cranked up the volume on this problem.

"We had a 500-year storm with a foot of rain in just a few hours!" Kudulis exclaims. This deluge surges through the landscape, picking up pollutants along the way. "Sediment is the number one water quality pollutant in the state."

The Ripple Effect: What It Means for Us

So, what's the big deal? Each rain event carries sediment downstream, eroding stream banks, felling trees, and disrupting vital ecosystems. "You just start to see these ecosystems collapse," Kudulis warns.

Green vs. Gray: Finding the Right Solution

The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program recognized the issue: "We know we have a problem." Faced with potential solutions, they opted for nature-based strategies (green technologies) over traditional gray infrastructure (deeper ditches).

D’Olive Watershed Restoration: A Success Story

The D’Olive Watershed Restoration showcases the power of this approach. "We’ve been active in this watershed for over a decade, restoring it," Kudulis says. They're improving water quality, enhancing riparian areas, and boosting the overall "vibe" of the ecosystem.

Attacking the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

The community wanted to fix a degraded lake, but the team looked upstream. "Instead of treating the symptom, we wanted to attack the cause," explains Kudulis. They found erosion hotspots called "headcuts."

"A headcut actually runs upstream," Kudulis warns. "It’s like pulling on a thread on your dress… before you know it, you unravel the whole thing.”

A Proactive Approach: The Key to Success

The goal? "We’re hopeful to shift from a reactive to a proactive situation. We can find [issues] when they’re small and get in there and be strategic and surgical." The D’Olive Watershed model has earned national acclaim.

Statewide Impact: We're All in This Together

Kudulis emphasizes that actions across Alabama impact our beloved coast. "The majority of the sediment that enters Mobile Bay comes from upstate." We all need to think about our impact.

"Land use management, stormwater management – all those things have a message that rings statewide," Kudulis concludes. Let's keep Alabama beautiful for generations!
