The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS) is thrilled to announce Kelly Augsburger Brasher as its very first Chief School Finance Officer (CSFO)! Brasher comes to the brand-new residential high school with a whopping 20+ years of business and finance experience.

For over a decade, Brasher kept Auburn City Schools' $150 million annual budget in tip-top shape as their accountant. She's a pro at everything from local school finance to massive capital projects, bidding, and even purchasing. Auburn's system, with nearly 10,000 students, is among Alabama's biggest and best!

Who Can Apply?

Senator Woods Takes Swift Action on School Safety

Newly elected State Senator Matt Woods (R-Jasper) is already making waves in Montgomery! Just weeks after winning the special election for Senate District 5 in June, Woods has pre-filed House Bill 7 (HB7) to better protect Alabama's schools and public institutions.

What's the Deal with HB7?

HB7 aims to create consistent, statewide rules for reporting and handling threats made against schools. Senator Woods knows that students and staff need to focus on learning, not worrying about potential lockdowns. "Threats to schools and churches are serious and must be treated as such," he stated.

Law Enforcement Gets the Call

Under HB7, school principals will be required to immediately notify law enforcement when anyone threatens violence that disrupts school, church, or government activities. This ensures a rapid and standardized response to possible dangers.

Students Facing Suspension and Evaluation

If a student is behind the threat, HB7 calls for a minimum one-year suspension from public school. Before returning, the student must undergo a psychiatric or psychological evaluation, plus any counseling or other requirements set by the local school board.

Tougher Penalties for Terrorist Threats

HB7 doesn't stop there! It also proposes stricter criminal penalties for those making terrorist threats:

• First-degree terrorist threats would jump from a Class C felony to a Class B felony.
• Second-degree threats could become a Class D felony, especially for repeat offenders.

These changes aim to discourage repeat offenses and give prosecutors more power to handle cases that disrupt public safety.

A Blast from the Past

HB7 builds upon HB356, which Woods introduced back in 2025. While HB7 zeroes in on enforcement and school response, the 2026 session may address other related measures.
