From Pratt City to President: Joe Hampton's Inspiring Journey

Growing up just northwest of Birmingham, young Joe Hampton learned valuable lessons from his parents, who always helped their Pratt City neighbors, even when they had little to spare themselves.

"I come from humble beginnings," says Hampton, now President of Spire Alabama, Gulf Coast and Mississippi. "My father worked in the coal mines, and my mom worked at a local beauty salon. They were always willing to support others in need."

Those early lessons stuck with him and now shape his leadership style at Spire.

Leading with Connection and Purpose

"It's an honor to lead an organization in the same state where I've grown up," Hampton says. "I see myself as an example of what so many young men and women can achieve here in Alabama."

His leadership is all about connection – mentoring young talent and ensuring families have reliable access to energy.

"My daily goal is to show up with enthusiasm and intentionality to serve," he explains. This includes guiding those interested in the industry, caring for customers, and supporting the team dedicated to providing top-notch service.

A Spire Story Rooted in Alabama

Hampton's journey with Spire (formerly Alabama Gas Corporation) began in 1992 as an intern. He steadily climbed the ranks, absorbing wisdom from every interaction.

"From the janitor to the CEO to the elderly woman needing assistance with her bill, each interaction left an impression," he recalls.

Investing in Alabama's Future

Hampton credits mentors who believed in him and encouraged his voice. To pay it forward, he's prioritized workforce development in Spire's southeast region. This includes the "Get into Energy" program, a partnership with Lawson State Community College that equips students with skills for entry-level jobs in the natural gas industry.

The program's first graduates in January 2025 earned certifications and some even landed jobs on the spot.

"I believe everyone deserves an opportunity to be successful, and it’s the responsibility of those with resources to step up and offer support," Hampton says.

More Than Just a Utility: Being a Good Neighbor

Community investment is core to Hampton, inspired by his mother's generosity.

"My mother’s heart was so big," he remembers, recalling how she'd give strangers rides and then bring them a warm meal. "Witnessing my mother’s acts of kindness and caring for others is why I’m passionate about supporting the communities we serve."

Spire supports students, nonprofits, and underserved neighborhoods across Alabama and Mississippi.

"At its core, community investment is using your resources to cultivate positive impact," he says. In 2024, Spire invested $6.5 million in its communities.

A Bright Future for Alabama

After 30+ years, Hampton remains driven by the difference Spire makes daily, providing reliable, affordable energy and improving lives.

With over 160 years in Alabama, Spire's future will be shaped by its leaders, relationships, and community impact.

"Through my actions, I want my team to understand that caring for others is the best part of becoming a leader everyone deserves," Hampton concludes.

Stardome Comedy Club Pulls Plug on Rapaport Show!

Hoover's Stardome Comedy Club is facing some heat after axing comedian Michael Rapaport's scheduled performance Tuesday night. Seems like things got a little too spicy!

What's the Deal?

The venue claims the cancellation was due to fears of a "potentially volatile situation" and "planned protests" spurred by Rapaport's vocal support for Israel. Stardome owner Bruce Ayers released a statement saying the club received over 100 social media messages urging them to cancel, plus word of planned protests.

Just a Comedy Gig, Man!

"We booked the show purely as a comedy event – no political agenda," Ayers said. "We're all about hosting a diverse range of entertainers, and our goal was simply to offer fans a fun night of laughs."

Rapaport Responds

The comedian didn't hold back on social media, making it clear the cancellation wasn't his call. He says he was ready to rock Birmingham!

Rapaport claims the show was shut down because of protests and threats related to his support for Israel and speaking out about the hostages still held in Gaza. He questioned why people were protesting him for demanding their release.

Stardome Says "Safety First!"

Ayers insists the cancellation wasn't about stifling Rapaport's views. "It was about preventing a potentially explosive situation and ensuring everyone's safety and peace of mind," he explained.

Not Backing Down

Rapaport vows he won't be silenced about the hostages. He said, “It’s embarrassing. It’s sad. But I’m not ashamed. I stand by what I say and who I stand with." He also mentioned meeting some folks from Chabad of Alabama and having a meaningful experience. Am Yisrael Chai!

No Charges in Jabari Peoples Shooting

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office has decided there will be no criminal charges filed against the Homewood police officer involved in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples on June 23, 2025. The DA ruled the shooting was legally justified.

Investigation Details

The decision comes after an investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). They handed over body camera footage and their findings to District Attorney Danny Carr. Carr then met with the Peoples family and their lawyers before announcing his decision on August 6.

What Happened?

According to reports, the incident began when an officer approached a vehicle and smelled marijuana. When the officer tried to detain Peoples, who had exited the car, he spotted a gun in the driver's side door. A struggle ensued as the officer attempted to handcuff Peoples. Reportedly, Peoples broke free, went for the vehicle, grabbed the weapon, and was then shot by the officer.

Bodycam Footage

Bodycam footage reportedly shows Peoples being shot in the back and falling to the ground with the gun still in his hand. The footage also shows the officer giving medical assistance immediately after the shooting. Sadly, the officer’s dashcam wasn’t activated until the altercation was underway.

Stand Your Ground

Carr stated that his ruling was based on the footage and Alabama’s Stand Your Ground law, which allows the use of deadly force if a person believes it is necessary to prevent harm. He stated that the evidence offered no basis for changing the conclusion that the shooting was legally justified.

Mayor's Statement

Homewood Mayor Alex Wyatt released a statement: "We have received the results of the District Attorney’s investigations into the shooting of Jabari Peoples. We note that the District Attorney found the ‘shooting is deemed justified’ and that no criminal charges will be filed against the Homewood Police Officer involved in this matter."

Wyatt also offered condolences to the Peoples family, adding, "We can’t imagine the anguish of the Peoples family in the aftermath of this tragic event and hope the community will respect the District Attorney’s decision, which he says is based on the facts and the law.”

What's Next?

With the DA's office done with the case, any further legal action, like a civil rights case, would be up to the Peoples family and the City of Homewood.
