Ivey Claps Back at Ex-VA Commissioner's Lawsuit

Governor Kay Ivey isn't backing down from a lawsuit filed by former Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Kent Davis. Davis claims Ivey wrongfully booted him from office, but the Governor is firing back!

"Groundless" Claims, Says Ivey

Ivey's legal team, from Maynard Nexsen, recently filed a response in federal court, slamming Davis's allegations as "groundless." They're asking the court to toss the whole case out.

Why the Boot?

Remember last October? That's when Ivey gave Davis the heave-ho from his VA Commissioner gig. Court docs say it was due to Davis allegedly mismanaging the Department, which hurt Alabama's veterans.

Mismanagement and Mayhem?

According to Ivey's filing, Davis's time as Commissioner was marked by "upheaval and disputes" with other state officials. Ivey claims she had valid reasons to remove him, citing "mishandled administration" of crucial federal funds that put veteran services at risk. She believes the lawsuit is just a "political dispute" fueled by Davis's "frustration" over his termination.

Davis's Side of the Story

Davis, however, argues that Ivey's decision violated his rights to free speech and due process. He's suggesting that lower-level executive officials are untouchable by the head of the executive branch, and that administrative agencies should handle hiring and firing.

Executive Power Play?

Ivey is taking a firm stance on executive power, pushing back against the idea that she can't remove a public-facing agency head for criticizing state policies related to his own agency. She argues that without the ability to remove "obstinate subordinates," obstructionist officials could prevent her from doing her job.

Judge Myron Thomson of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama will decide whether Davis's lawsuit against Governor Ivey will proceed. Stay tuned!

Besides his city council stint, Crow served on the Alabama Workforce Council (2014) and was appointed to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (2017) by Governor Ivey, serving until 2022.

Folks in Congress, like Senator Mike Lee and Representative John James, are stepping up with the App Store Accountability Act. This bill would require app stores to get a parent's okay before a child can download apps or agree to shady contracts that let tech companies snoop on their microphones, locations, cameras, and photos.

This is huge! It puts the power back where it belongs – with parents. It's about protecting our traditional family values from the clutches of Big Tech. For too long, app stores have been a Wild West, letting kids access inappropriate stuff without Mom and Dad's permission. Some apps even have chat features, making it easy for creeps to connect with our children. Plus, a lot of these apps are from China, raising major security concerns about our personal info.

Alabama's Fight for Parental Rights

We need everyone on board! The App Store Accountability Act is a great way to link kids' devices to their guardians and get that parental permission. Other states are already taking action.

Alabama has already been fighting the good fight. Senator Clyde Chambliss introduced a similar bill. It might have stalled, but it shows Alabama's dedication to protecting our kids. A state and federal App Store Accountability Act would make sure parents are always in charge.

Overwhelming Support for Protecting Our Kids

This isn't some crazy idea. A whopping 83% of Alabama parents want app stores to get their consent before kids download apps. Teens are using tons of apps – some up to 125 a week! Parental involvement has to be a priority.

Our leaders in D.C. need to join Representative James and Senator Lee and pass the App Store Accountability Act. It's time for protections that match the real world. We ID folks buying age-restricted stuff in stores, so we need the same safeguards online.

It's About Parental Control, Not Big Government

Let's keep decision-making where it belongs – with parents. The App Store Accountability Act is a smart, effective solution that gives parents a clear path to navigate these tricky app policies.

Alabama and the rest of the country want to keep the government out of our lives, but we also want to make sure parents have the tools they need to protect their children.
