Speaker Ledbetter Gets the Green Light from Electric Co-ops!

Big news for House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R–Rainsville)! The Electric Cooperatives of Alabama Political Action Committee (PAC) is backing him for re-election, citing his stellar leadership and dedication to rural energy.

Powering Rural Alabama

This endorsement comes straight from the heart of the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives (AREA), representing electric co-ops all across the state. Cooperative leaders on the PAC's board gave the thumbs-up, solidifying their support.

A Champion for Co-ops

"Speaker Ledbetter gets it," says Karl Rayborn, CEO of AREA. "He knows just how crucial electric co-ops are to rural Alabama. We're confident his continued leadership will keep our energy future bright!"

From Grass Cutter to Leader

Ledbetter's journey with electric co-ops started way back in high school, mowing lawns at Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative. He then spent 33 years at the co-op, becoming a journeyman lineman, earning a field engineering certificate, and even managing key accounts. Talk about dedication!

"Deep Understanding"

Sean Strickler, AREA's VP of External Affairs, emphasizes Ledbetter's deep roots: "Having worked at Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative for 33 years, Mr. Speaker brings a deep understanding of the co-op community and what it takes to continue powering rural Alabama."

United Support

AREA officials say this endorsement shows the unified support of Alabama’s cooperatives and their shared mission: strengthening rural communities while pushing Alabama's energy future forward. Go Speaker Ledbetter!

Mayor Segraves Eyes Alabama House Seat!

Guin Mayor Phil Segraves is throwin' his hat in the ring! He's officially announced his bid for the Republican nomination in Alabama House District 17, folks. That covers Marion and Lamar counties, plus Haleyville in Winston County.

"Gonna Grow Our Economy!"

Segraves says he's stoked to keep boosting Northwest Alabama's economy. "I've spent my career bringin' investment here," he declared, "and I'm gonna keep fightin' for good jobs and development in Marion, Lamar, and Haleyville!"

Local Boy Does Good

This ain't Segraves' first rodeo! He's served FIVE terms as Guin's mayor. Before that, he was on the Guin City Council. Plus, he's been all over the local and regional scene with boards like the Guin Park and Rec, NACOLG, and the Northwest Alabama Gas Board. Oh, and he used to be the big cheese at the Alabama League of Municipalities!

Schools, Taxes, and Rural Roots

"At the Statehouse, I'll keep focusin' on rural development," Segraves promised. "But I'll also make sure our schools – K-12, two-year, and tech schools – get the funding they need!" He's also vowing to stand strong for conservative values and keep taxes low.

I-22 Boom!

During his mayoral tenure, Segraves spearheaded efforts to bring Guin's city limits right up to I-22. He helped score funding for water, sewer, gas, electricity, and broadband along that corridor. That led to a 101-room Holiday Inn, bringing 54 new jobs! He also teamed up with regional leaders to get the first electric vehicle supercharging station on I-22, right there at the hotel.

Makin' Guin a Destination!

"Now thousands stop in Guin to eat, stay at our hotel, and charge their EVs!" Segraves exclaimed. "I'm proud of the teamwork between governments, developers, and our utility partners!"

The Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026. Get out and vote, ChumCity!

Tide's Ready to Roll with New Captains!

The Crimson Tide are just around the corner from kickoff, and the squad just dropped a major announcement: team captains! Yea Alabama (the University's NIL collective) spilled the beans, and Coach DeBoer's picks are in. Not exactly shocking, but definitely worth a shout!

Who's Leading the Charge?

Let's hear it for the captains! Quarterback Ty Simpson joins center Parker Brailsford representing the offense, while linebacker Deontae Lawson and defensive lineman Tim Keenan will hold down the defense.

Simpson's Rise

Ty Simpson, who's been grinding since 2022, finally snagged the starting spot. Naming him captain sends a clear message: he's got the locker room locked down and is ready to lead against Florida State!

Brailsford: O-Line Anchor

Brailsford, a DeBoer import from Washington, is a top-tier center. He's here to anchor the O-line and is vital to the team's success this season!

Lawson's Return

Deontae Lawson is back for year five, hungry for a healthy, productive season. After an injury sidelined him last year, he's aiming to finish his Tide career with a bang! A captain in '24, he's a vocal leader and a key piece of the D.

Keenan's Time to Shine

Tim Keenan, also in his fifth year, redshirted early but has since battled his way to a starting role. His breakout season last year makes him a natural choice for captain. He's another NFL hopeful ready to leave it all on the field!

Onward and Upward

With the captains named, the Tide can now focus on reaching their full potential this season. Roll Tide!

Alabama's Redistricting Rollercoaster Continues!

Hold on tight, ChumCity citizens! The legal battle over Alabama's political maps just took another twist. A federal judge has ruled that the state's 2021 State Senate map violates the Voting Rights Act, specifically in the Montgomery area. But Huntsville, you're off the hook!

What's the Deal?

Basically, the court's saying Alabama needs to redraw the lines to create a district in the Montgomery area where Black voters have a real chance to elect their preferred candidate. Think of it as a second chance for the legislature to get it right, or else the court will step in and do it for them – again, like they did in 2023.

Montgomery in the Hot Seat

The judge wants the GOP-led legislature to take the first crack at fixing the problem, but with a clear message: make sure that new district in Montgomery gives Black voters a genuine opportunity to elect someone they choose. The court made it clear that lawmakers should be mindful to draw a district in the Montgomery area in which Black voters either comprise a voting-age majority or something quite close to it.

Huntsville Dodges a Bullet

Meanwhile, plaintiffs wanted a second "Black-opportunity" district around Huntsville, but the court shot that down, citing issues with how compact and connected the district would be. State Sen. Sam Givhan (R-Huntsville) can breathe easy – his district isn't getting redrawn.

ACLU Declares Victory (Sort Of)

Even though they didn't get everything they wanted, the ACLU is calling this a win. Why? Because it's another round in a series of Voting Rights Act cases sparked by the landmark Allen v. Milligan case.

What's Next?

This whole saga is far from over. Alabama's appeal in the Milligan case is still pending, and the Supreme Court might be rethinking how the Voting Rights Act is applied across the country. A hearing is scheduled for next week on this Senate map ruling. Buckle up, folks, because this redistricting ride is bound to have more twists and turns!
